Once faced with the power of nature, we as humans feel quite small and powerless. Our new Theme resulted to very interesting and amazing topics as the focus was shifted from learning about basic weather, to exploring “Natural Disasters”, more specifically how they are formed and the impact they have on human beings.

Our students were awarded an opportunity of choosing the disasters that interested them the most, and they chose the most popular and well-known disasters such as "earthquakes", "tsunamis" and "volcanic eruptions". So, what exactly did we learn when exploring nature’s mysteries?

By doing some amazing Science experiments, we learned that volcanic eruptions represent movements from within earth’s surface due to thermal energy being released. The red-hot liquid we see is called “magma” which gets pushed up towards the earth’s surface due to pressure which inevitably results to a volcanic eruption. The students could also create their own DIY volcanoes which was a lot of fun.

We also learned how Tsunami’s are formed by watching our famous friend, "Dr. Binocs" explain that a Tsunami is caused by underground volcanic eruptions, landslides, man-made underwater nuclear explosions or meteorite impacts. Did you know that an ocean wave formed by "tsunamis" can reach a height of 100 feet? Amazing right? This was demonstrated through amazing crafts students made by using knowledge the learnt to create waves using a mosaic art approach.

Lastly was learning about something we experience more often, especially here in Taiwan. Earthquakes! Our creative teachers used materials such as vibrating exercising machines to demonstrate the effects of earthquakes. The most exciting part was our Fieldtrip to "921 Earthquake Education Park" where our students encountered a more practical approach, especially looking through an “air corridor” where one could visually see collapsed buildings. What an interesting and amazing experience and theme this was to explore.
